Cake:

2 cups pecan halves

¾ cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

5 large eggs, at room temperature, separated

1 cup granulated sugar, divided

¼ cup vegetable oil

3 tablespoons orange juice or water

2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

French Buttercream & Assembly:

5 large egg yolks, slightly warmed**

½ cup granulated sugar

1 tablespoon water

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1½ cups unsalted butter at room temperature

2 tablespoons brandy or orange liqueur (optional)

2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest

1 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste

½ teaspoon salt

12-16 toasted pecan halves
